Content writing is a lucrative career path. It has the potential to provide you with both stability and freedom in your work schedule, depending on what day job you have. The opportunities are endless, but it can be difficult to know where to start.
Here I am sharing the tips aspiring content writers take in their journey towards becoming successful in this field.
#1: Look for a mentor:
It's important to find someone with who you can learn from and grow. This person should be knowledgeable about the field and willing to assist you as you learn. This person can be at your current job or someone else in the industry. Either way, make sure it is someone with whom you feel comfortable and confident working with as they will help guide your progress as a content creator.
There are many creative ways to meet creative people. Have you tried searching for creative events (like creative writing workshops, creative writing classes, creative writing classes online) or visiting craft stores? The list of possibilities is endless.
#2: Attend events:
It's important to try new things and try out new things. Attending events is a great way to meet other writers and expand your network. Events will provide you with a great opportunity to gain exposure. Meet as many people as possible and try writing for people you have connections with.
#3: Use your connections:
Do you have a connection that could benefit from a written piece? Be sure to mention this when introducing yourself. If they do need content, ask if you can make a sample for them to consider hiring you. This sample will be the writing sample you show potential employers in order to get your foot in the door.
#4: Be active on social media:
It is important to be active on social media. It gives you the opportunity to meet new people, share your work with your networks, and potentially make connections in your field. When you can introduce yourself to people by sharing your work with them, it becomes more personal and they are more likely to hire you in the future. A strong presence on social media can also help you in this venture.
#5: Create a writing portfolio:
A writing portfolio is a great way to display your work and help you land your first paid gig. Create a section on your website to share all of your work and be sure to include samples of your most outstanding written works. Keep it relevant and up-to-date. It is important to not just post blogs or articles that were published online, but also include the blog posts that were rejected by publishers, such as LinkedIn posts and guest posts on other blogs.
#6: Build relationships with publishers:
Publishers are a great way to get your name out there and develop a relationship with them. Look for publications that have been around for a while, have shown consistency in their content, and have a large readership. Sending a sample to these publishers will give you the opportunity to show them how well you can write and will help build your portfolio. Publishing your work on sites that accept guest posts is another great way to get noticed by both writers and readers.
#7: Don't be discouraged:
There are always people who doubt you can do it. However, as long as you keep the faith and remember the purpose of this journey, things will work out in your favor. You just have to keep searching for opportunities that will benefit your career.
Happy content writing!
